Lonely Whale

In my recent practice, I have made a series of two artworks that revolve around the "World's Loneliest Whale". It is inspired by the song titled "Whalien 52" by the world famous K-pop group BTS. Here, I have made a narrative where we would see the whale's point of view while it is searching for company.

Can You Hear Me?

In some ways, I relate to the whale. I would like to find someone that I can be with or rely on when I am lonely. It is human nature afterall to find a companion. With the strong and bold strokes of the lines, it shows how determined the lonely whale is to find a companion. Where lines have crossed it asks out, “CAN YOU HEAR ME?” When it is alone, it talks to itself saying, “COMPANY” , “LONELY” and “ANYONE?”

Lost in Translation

Contrasting to Can You Hear Me? , this work shows how the whale has given up on finding a companion and is in a state of denial. With the staggered morse code in between broken lines, it spells out “NO”. In the middle of the work however has the morse code spell out “NO?” signifying the last bit of hope that it has. Lastly, at where the only line that crosses paths, the whale says to itself, “MAYBE ONE DAY”.
